Pacific Biodiversity Institute and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (Methow Wildlife Area) Dual-Internship Program

Pacific Biodiversity Institute (PBI), a conservation science research and education non-profit organization located in Winthrop, WA, and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Methow Wildlife Area, are offering a dual-internship program for the spring and summer of 2008. This is the second year of this program. The selected intern applicant has a chance to learn from an array of experts in several fields. The program is structured so that approximately half the internship is overseen by WDFW with emphasis placed on WDFW projects while the other half is focused on PBI projects and is overseen by PBI staff. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in field research, data analysis, and monitoring surveys related to vegetation community health, rangeland health, rare plant occurrence, noxious weed infestations, and wildlife habitat management. There will be opportunities for extensive GIS training using the latest versions of ArcGIS and ArcPad. Interns may have the opportunity to gain a knowledge and experience in field botany, vegetation community analysis, range management, ecosystem management, wildlife management and conservation science.

Location
Interns will work out of Pacific Biodiversity Institute and the Methow Wildlife Area headquarters offices near Winthrop, Washington.  Travel will be required between offices and there may be some travel to other locations in Washington State for up to 10 days at a time.  During multi-day field excursions camping will be necessary at the location of the field work.

Duration
Internships will be full-time and last for at least 3 months during the field season (March-November)

Compensation
Housing and an expense stipend of $500 to $800 per month depending on financial need and experience

Desired Qualifications
Coursework or experience in at least some of the following areas is necessary (note - training will also be provided in areas you do not have experience in):

  • Ecology, Conservation Biology, Systematic or Field Botany
  • Familiarity with Pacific Northwest plants and plant communities
  • Experience using GPS equipment
  • Familiarity with GIS concepts and applications
  • Other Necessary Qualifications

  • Physically fit, positive personality, and self-motivated
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Ability to concentrate, output high quality work, and have fun in difficult situations

    The mission of Pacific Biodiversity Institute is to develop information and tools to conserve biodiversity and maintain ecological integrity.
