See the first map showing all of the large wildland complexes in South America!
Pacific Biodiversity Institute has produced the first maps showing all of the roadless areas in South America! This map is still being worked on, but you can get a first glimpse of it here. Keep in mind that parts of these roadless areas are agricultural land and people do live in some parts of these areas. What you see in these maps is that most of South America is still the BIG WILD (roadless areas over 1 million hectares). These South America Wildlands are where the planet's biodiversity reaches its maximum expression. That should make you more optimistic about the chances of conserving biodiversity. That is why we call it Biota Maxima!
