Roadless Areas on State Lands in Washington State
There are currently about 1,150,000 acres of state owned roadless land in Washington State. These are areas over 1000 in size. This includes all state owned land - mostly Department of Natural Resources and Department of Fish and Wildlife. Since most state land exists in multiple ownership landscapes, much of the state roadless land exists in what we call multiple ownership roadless areas. Part of an individual roadless area might be federal, another part state and the remainder privately owned. The total acreage reported above includes pieces of state land in roadless areas where the piece of state land may be less than 1000 acres but the entire roadless area is greater than 1000 acres.
These state owned roadless lands cover diverse habitat types. They range from wetlands and rainforests to arid lands, shrub-steppe, grasslands and dry forests. They often represent some of the rarest habitat types and areas of high biodiversity. Most have no protection or only limited protection.
