Name:  Idaho Springsnail (USFWS photo)
   (Pyrgulopsis (=Fontelicella) idahoensis)
Status: Federal Endangered
Listed:  December 14, 1992
Description: A small aquatic snail with a conical shell
Threats: Habitat loss, water pollution

Overview:  The Idaho springsnail is only found in the permanently flowing waters of the main Snake River.  This species feeds on plant debris and micro-organisms as it glides along the river bottom.  The damming of the Snake River, as well as the pollution of the water by agricultural run-off, has largely contributed to the destruction of nearly 80 percent of this snail's habitat.  The Snake River Recovery Plan includes provisions that would help ensure the survival of the Idaho springsnail, and can be viewed at http://endangered.fws.gov/recovery/recplans/index.htm.

Distribution: The Idaho springsnail once occupied the waters of ancient Lake Idaho.  Today, this snail survives in a few mainstream Snake River sites near C.J. Strike reservoir upstream to Bancroft Springs.
